The Teaching Museum South, nestled in the former North Avenue Elementary School in Hapeville, Georgia, isn’t your typical museum. It’s a vibrant hub where history leaps off the pages of textbooks and into the hands of eager learners. The Teaching Museum South, along with its northern counterpart, forms a unique part of the Fulton County Schools system. Established over three decades ago, this institution serves as a testament to the school board’s vision of creating a dynamic learning environment. Their mission is simple yet powerful: to ignite a spark in students, connecting them to their learning in a profound way. The Teaching Museum South boasts an impressive array of 80 programs. These programs cater to students from pre-K to eighth grade, aligning with the Georgia Standards of Excellence. From theatrical performances that transport students to different eras, to hands-on experiments that bring scientific principles to life, there’s something to captivate every young mind. The museum offers around 10 to 12 programs per grade level, spanning humanities, STEM subjects, and the arts. In fact, this year alone has seen 269 program bookings, a testament to its popularity. One of the most remarkable aspects of The Teaching Museum South is its commitment to accessibility. All programs are offered free of charge to Fulton County Schools, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to experience these enriching learning opportunities. Beyond its regular programs, The Teaching Museum South also manages the Cultural Kaleidoscope field trips. These trips, part of the Bridge to Success program, give elementary students the chance to explore various cultural institutions in Atlanta. Currently, The Teaching Museum South houses a fascinating exhibit, “A Look Back, A Look Forward: The Creek and Cherokee of Georgia,” offering a glimpse into the rich history of the region’s indigenous peoples. The Teaching Museum South is more than just a museum.
