“Rebuild and recover.” That was the divine message Bishop Tyrone G. Jefferson, Jr. received after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and his church. Today we stand before The Tabernacle Church a testament to faith and resilience.
The Abundant Life Tabernacle affectionately known as “Da Tab” was founded in 1995. Bishop Jefferson and twenty others shared a powerful vision. Their initial meeting at Bro. Cordell Chambliss’ home solidified their commitment. Key figures included the late Missionary Mildred Jefferson and Sis. Brenda King-Smith. Bishop Jefferson’s vision outlined the mission and future of the Abundant Life Baptist Church.
A week later the congregation began worship services at Sis. Brenda King-Smith’s home. Rapid growth soon necessitated a move to a leased building at 1920 Franklin Ave. For four years this location served as the church’s home. The congregation continued to expand requiring a larger permanent facility. They purchased a double house and an adjacent beauty salon at 1800 Arts Street. Bishop Jefferson transformed these properties into a worship facility and a fellowship hall.
The church flourished but in 2005 Hurricane Katrina struck. It devastated the area destroying the church and displacing its members. After Katrina Bishop Jefferson received that divine message. He was told to “rebuild and recover.” He spearheaded the reconstruction of The Abundant Life Tabernacle.
Slowly displaced members returned. The church experienced unprecedented growth. To accommodate the increasing membership Bishop Jefferson added another worship service. He acquired additional property at 1701 Franklin Ave. This new site previously served as a medical center and dialysis clinic. It now featured expanded facilities including administrative offices a bookstore and multiple rooms for various functions. These enhancements improved the church’s capacity to serve its congregation and community.
By 2007 The Tabernacle’s efforts were further bolstered by the purchase of another duplex. This generated additional revenue. The church’s impact extends beyond its immediate community. Its initiatives include the Multi-Purpose Center. This center feeds hundreds of people monthly. Internationally The Tabernacle’s mission efforts reach as far as Kenya and Keto Ecuador. This reflects its commitment to global outreach.
The Abundant Life Tabernacle has become a transformative force. It is evident in the lives it touches and the souls it saves. The church’s ministries address various aspects of human needs. These range from spiritual growth to practical assistance.
