Lost in time, the Sukhothai Wihan stands as a testament to a forgotten era. The Sukhothai Wihan at Muang Boran isn’t just a reconstruction. It’s a resurrection of Sukhothai artistry and architectural ingenuity. The wihan was meticulously recreated using archaeological and historical data, drawing inspiration from the wihan of Phra Buddha Chinarat at Wat Phra Siratana Mahathat in Phitsanulok. However, the original Phra Buddha Chinarat wihan has been significantly altered by numerous restorations. To capture the true essence of Sukhothai architecture, Muang Boran turned to Wat Nang Phaya in Si Satchanalai. The Sukhothai Wihan showcases a unique blend of influences. Its design echoes the wihan of Phra Buddha Chinarat, but its soul belongs to Sukhothai. The intricate details, both inside and out, are borrowed from originals found in Sukhothai, Si Satchanalai, and even Chiang Saen in Chiang Rai. Look closely at the ceramic roof ornaments. They are precise replicas of pieces from Si Satchanalai’s Sangkalk kilns. The presiding Buddha image within the Sukhothai Wihan is a tribute to the Walking Buddha Image. This image is taken from the niche on the north face of the mondop at Wat Traphang Thong Lang in Sukhothai. The frame surrounding the image draws inspiration from Wat Pa Sak in Chiang Saen. The lotus capitals? They’re a nod to Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathat of Chalieng. The mural ornaments? They whisper tales from Wat Nang Phaya in Si Satchanalai. Even the engraved schist slabs embedded in the walls, reminiscent of the secret passage in Wat Si Chum’s mondop, contribute to the Sukhothai Wihan’s rich tapestry of detail. The Sukhothai Wihan at Muang Boran is more than just a building. It is a living museum, a portal to the artistic and architectural brilliance of the Sukhothai period.
