Was it fate or a divine plan that led to the creation of St. James School? It stands today as a beacon of hope. It transforms lives in Philadelphia.

St. James School began with a vision. This vision sought to serve under-resourced students. It aimed to provide them with a nurturing educational environment. Saint Mark’s Church played a pivotal role. In 2008, it adopted the historic Church of St. James the Less. The goal was to restore ministry to the property. They wanted to create a place of transformation for the community.

The opening of St. James School in September 2011 realized this dream. It was the result of dedicated prayers and hard work. St. James is the only Episcopal school in Philadelphia. It offers a top-quality, tuition-free private education to all its students. More than 1,000 annual donors and volunteers support the school.

Class sizes are capped at 18 students. This ensures a 7:1 student-instructor ratio. The extended school day lasts ten hours. There is also a Saturday and Sunday program. The school year runs for eleven months. This provides ample time for learning.

The curriculum challenges students academically. It encourages the development of their moral gifts. Students also develop spiritual, intellectual, physical, and creative gifts. St. James School serves students in grades 4 through 8.

The Graduate Support Team maintains close contact with students. This support continues throughout grades 9-12. Mentoring and tutoring ensure their success. Support extends to college applications. It helps with entering technical schools or careers. St. James students never stop being St. James students.

Consider the story of a young student. He comes from a challenging background. He finds a supportive community at St. James. He receives personalized attention. He excels academically and discovers hidden talents. With guidance from the Graduate Support Team, he gains acceptance into a top high school. This sets him on a path to college and a fulfilling career.

Imagine the sounds of children laughing. They are learning within the walls of St. James School. Picture dedicated teachers inspiring students. Imagine volunteers giving their time. This creates a nurturing atmosphere. Feel the sense of hope and possibility that permeates the school.

St. James Church has a rich history. Its story began in November 1637. Two small ships sailed from Gothenburg, Sweden. They were bound for the New World. Swedish descendants settled in the area. They had to travel far to attend church. Rev. Carl Wrangel began preaching in the area. He preached at the house of James Coultas. Crowds grew so large that he had to preach outdoors. People decided to build a church. James Coultas supervised the building.

In 1777 to 1778, the British occupied Philadelphia. General Sir William Howe made his headquarters across from the burying ground. Revolutionary Soldiers lie in the cemetery. In 1844 St. James Church became an Episcopal Church.

Today, St. James School carries forward the legacy. It is a place where students are nurtured. They are challenged. They are empowered to reach their full potential. The school embodies the values of faith, community, and service. It prepares students to become leaders. These leaders will transform their communities. St. James School is not just a school. It is a family. It is a beacon of hope. It is a testament to the power of education.
