Cascading greenery climbs toward the sky. This is The Spiral, a unique skyscraper in Hudson Yards. It stands on 34th Street between Hudson Boulevard and Tenth Avenue. The Spiral rises 1,031 feet tall with 66 floors. It offers 2.85 million square feet of space.

The Spiral got its name honestly. Each floor features outdoor gardens that spiral around the building’s facade. This creates a continuous green pathway. Bjarke Ingels Group designed The Spiral. They also designed the nearby West 57.

Imagine taking a break on one of these terraces. You’re high above the city. Yet, you are surrounded by plants native to the American prairie. These plants resist high winds and droughts. The higher you go, the more diverse the plant life. Shrubs and trees blossom even in winter. Ivy climbs vertical trellises.

The tower was first conceptualized in 2014. Back then, it was known as the Hudson Spire. The original plan was for a 1,800-foot roof height. The architectural height would have reached 2,000 feet. It was marketed as the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

Tishman Speyer, the developer, invested heavily in the site. They even paid $25 million to two tenants to relocate. These men lived in a four-story building on the site. They threatened to delay the project with legal challenges.

Construction finally started in 2018. In January 2021, The Spiral topped out. It officially opened in 2023. The building boasts an irrigation system. Bosch designed it to save 4.5 million gallons of water per year.

The Spiral includes a restaurant run by Erik Ramirez and Juan Correa. They are known for Llama San and Llama Inn. Several major companies have offices in The Spiral. These include Pfizer, HSBC, and Debevoise & Plimpton. Turner Construction even relocated their headquarters here. They helped build The Spiral.

The Spiral’s design drew inspiration from classic Manhattan skyscrapers. Think of the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center. The terraces offer views of Manhattan, the Hudson River, and New Jersey. The 66th floor features a clubhouse and open-air terrace.

The Spiral isn’t just a building. It’s a statement. It integrates nature into the urban environment. It provides a unique workspace. The Spiral saves millions of gallons of water annually. It is a green addition to the New York skyline.
