The Spiller House is more than just a home. It’s a work of art. Filmmaker Jane Spiller commissioned Gehry. She wanted something unique something truly reflecting her personality. She wasn’t afraid of pushing boundaries. She gave Gehry free rein to create. The result is this stunning structure. Two boxlike units stand side by side. One for Spiller the other for tenants.

The exterior is unassuming. Unpainted corrugated metal sheets form the facade. The interior however is far from ordinary. It’s full of Gehry’s signature idiosyncrasies. Exposed studs irregular angles visible ductwork. The design is both playful and functional. A rectangular opening cuts through the second floor. It reveals a skylight almost perpendicular to the floor below.

The current resident Florian Marquardt describes the house as a little wild. But he sees the logic in its design. He loves the way light plays off the angles. Even his dog River appreciates the unique architecture. He enjoys chasing toys up the wooden staircase. Marquardt a freelance creative director. He was thrilled to find himself living in a Gehry design. His modern furnishings contrast beautifully with Gehry’s raw deconstructivist style.
