On May 6, 1954, history was made right here. This is The Roger Bannister Running Track. It is more than just a track. It’s a testament to human endeavor. This is the very spot where Sir Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile.

Let’s step back in time. Before it was named The Roger Bannister Running Track, it was simply known as the Iffley Road track. The University of Oxford owns and operates this historic ground. The original track was built in 1876. It was a grass track at Marston Road Sports Grounds. It often flooded. The university decided to build a new running track at Iffley Road.

Fast forward to 1948. Roger Bannister, a 19-year-old student, became President of Oxford University’s Athletic Club. He wanted to replace the old bumpy track. He envisioned a new six-lane 440 yards track. His vision became reality in 1950. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford opened the refurbished track.

Now, focus on May 6, 1954. Bannister, a full-time medical student, trained just 45 minutes a day. He was determined to break the four-minute mile. The wind was gusting. Bannister almost withdrew from the race. But then the wind dropped. He decided to compete. Christopher Chataway and Chris Brasher were his pacemakers. They were to run the first three-quarters of a mile in under three minutes. Bannister completed the final lap in under a minute.

Imagine the roar of the crowd as it was announced. Bannister had run the mile in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds. He collapsed after crossing the finish line. The Roger Bannister Running Track became legendary that day.

In 2007, the track was refurbished. Lord Coe, Chairman of the London Olympic Games, reopened it. He renamed it The Roger Bannister Running Track.

The Roger Bannister Running Track is part of the Iffley Road Sports Complex. It’s a versatile venue. Besides athletics, it hosts various events. It has meeting spaces and facilities for different occasions.

Today, The Roger Bannister Running Track holds UK Athletics certification. This allows it to host race meetings. Athletes can even attempt to break records here. Each year runners celebrate the Bannister Community Mile here. They follow a course through Oxford. They finish on this iconic track.

As you stand here, think about Bannister’s determination. Remember the cheers of the crowd. Feel the history beneath your feet at The Roger Bannister Running Track. It’s more than just a track. It’s a symbol of what humans can achieve.
