High above its surroundings, Radar Hill stands as a testament to history. It’s more than just a hill. It is a memorial site honoring the Harel Brigade.

Radar Hill’s story is one of conflict and resilience. During the War of Independence, the Harel Brigade fought fiercely. They tried to capture this strategic site, but they did not succeed. It was not until the Six-Day War in 1967 that the hill finally came under control.

Look around you at the military vehicles. See the tanks in the plaza at the foot of the tower. These are silent witnesses to the battles that raged here in Jerusalem. They serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made.

The observation tower atop Radar Hill was designed by architect Arye Sharon and his son Eldad. Its unique design resembles two radar dishes. These stand on concrete legs. Ascend the tower to witness one of the most spectacular views. The Jerusalem Mountains stretch out before you.

The Harel Brigade monument is dedicated to fallen soldiers. Their names are immortalized here. Yitzhak Rabin is among them. He commanded the Harel Brigade. He later served as the country’s Prime Minister. Uri Ben Ari is also remembered. He was the commander during the Six-Day War.

From Radar Hill, you can embark on the KKL-JNF 1948 Trail. This path descends into the Maale HaHamisha Forest. It ends at the Kiryat Anavim Military Cemetery. The local Kibbutz Kiryat Anavim served as a base for Harel Brigade soldiers.

In January 1948, Palmach members who fell in battle were buried here. They fought on the road to Jerusalem. Most were from the Harel Brigade. Some were from the Etzioni Brigade. This brigade defended Jerusalem.

Radar Hill’s Hebrew name is Givat Ha’radar. It stands as a reminder of war. It also stands as a place of remembrance. Take a moment to reflect on the panoramic view. Remember those who fought here. Their sacrifices shaped the landscape before us.
