How about stepping into a place where serenity meets history? Here before us stands The Prophet Mosque in Dammam. It is more than just a building. It is a testament to faith, history, and architectural brilliance.

The Prophet Mosque is also known as Al-Masjid Al-Nabawi. The Prophet Mosque is not just any mosque. It holds the distinction of being the second holiest site in Islam. Only Masjid al-Haram in Mecca surpasses it in sanctity.

Imagine Muhammad himself involved in its creation. He arrived in Medina in 622 AD and personally oversaw the construction. The land was owned by two young orphans. They offered it as a gift. However, Muhammad insisted on paying for it. He wanted to ensure fairness to the orphaned children.

Originally, The Prophet Mosque was an open-air building. It served as a community center. It was a court of law. The Prophet Mosque was also a religious school. Over time, Islamic rulers expanded and decorated it. They named its walls, doors, and minarets after themselves.

One of the most iconic features of The Prophet Mosque is the Green Dome. It marks the final resting place of Muhammad. Pilgrims from around the world visit Medina to see this revered site.

In 1909, The Prophet Mosque became the first place in the Arabian Peninsula with electrical lights. This was under the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Imagine the soft glow illuminating the sacred space for the first time.

The mosque has a rich history of expansions. The first expansion occurred during Muhammad’s life. Later expansions took place during the reigns of Umar bin al-Khattab and Othman bin Affan. The kings of modern Saudi Arabia also oversaw significant renovations.

The Prophet Mosque is open 24 hours a day. It welcomes visitors and worshippers every day of the year. The Blessed Rawdah is a particularly special area. Many describe it as paradise on earth. Here, one can find serenity and peace.

Consider the architecture. The modern-day mosque sits on a rectangular plot. It features a flat roof with sliding domes. These domes open to illuminate the interior. They also provide shade.

The chamber next to the Rawdah contains the tombs of Muhammad, Abu Bakr, and Umar. A fourth grave is reserved for Jesus. Muslims believe he will return and be buried here.

The Rawdah is known as The Noble Garden. It is regarded as one of the Gardens of Paradise. A green carpet distinguishes it from the rest of the mosque.

The mosque has two mihrabs. One was built by Muhammad and the other by Uthman. Uthman’s mihrab is larger and serves as the functional mihrab.

The minbar used by Muhammad was originally a block of date palm wood. It was later replaced with a tamarisk one. Today, the mosque uses an Ottoman minbar made of marble.

The Prophet Mosque has ten minarets. They stand tall at 104 meters high. The minarets feature cylindrical, octagonal, and square shapes.

As you stand here, remember the historical events and the spiritual significance of The Prophet Mosque. It continues to be a beacon of faith. It is a place of peace for millions of Muslims worldwide. Its story is etched in its walls, domes, and minarets. It echoes in the prayers of those who gather here.
