Now, let’s consider another church. This one is named Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church. It has a rich history dating back to 1867. A group of baptized believers united to form it. They called their church Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Henry Harris was elected as the first pastor.
Initially, they worshiped in members’ homes. Unified and determined, they built a Bush Arbor. It was a place for worship on rented land. As the church grew financially, they purchased land. A church was erected on the two-acre plot.
Over the years, Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church faced challenges. In the early 1900s, a fire destroyed the church. Rev. Brevard and the members held services in a schoolhouse. They solicited money and built another sanctuary. Tragedy struck again when a tornado leveled the building. Rev. Steverson led the congregation back to the schoolhouse. By 1947, another church was completed under Rev. W. M. Shelton.
Rev. Harold Harvey pastored the church longer than any other minister. Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church has survived many disasters. It continues to invite saints and sinners to join. Its mission is clear to save sinners and encourage believers. The dedicated members know they are successful because of pioneers. Their unwavering faith and rich traditions built a real foundation. The church is a homecoming memory, a reunion and a spiritual revival. It is a time to be thankful for the past. It is a time to plan for the future. It is a time to press on to a higher goal.
Another Promise Land Church was organized on August 23, 1863. Eleven charter members were there. Hogan Allen was the first pastor. They met in a log schoolhouse. The school house was too small for all attendees. Promise Land Church got its name from the community. T.J. Wells moved to the area. He wrote that he had found the land of promise. The community became known as the Promise Land community. The church has transitioned through many facilities because of growth. Jesus is their Lord and Savior. They worship, honor and serve Him.
