Ninety-two rooms. That’s a lot of space for one family. But this isn’t just any family home. This is Áras an Uachtaráin the official residence of the President of Ireland. Right here before you stands a piece of Irish history.

Built in the mid-eighteenth century by architect Nathaniel Clements this magnificent building was originally designed in 1751. It wasn’t always known as Áras an Uachtaráin though. For a long time it was called the Viceregal Lodge the home of the British viceroy. Can you imagine the transformations this building has witnessed?

The building has undergone numerous expansions and renovations. The formal gardens were added in 1840. The East Wing was constructed for Queen Victoria’s visit in 1849. Even the addition of gas in 1852 and electricity in 1908 shaped its evolution. Imagine the grandeur of Queen Victoria’s arrival or the electrifying moment when electricity first illuminated its halls. A substantial West Wing extension was added in 1911 for the visit of King George V and Queen Mary.

After Ireland’s independence the building became the home of Governor-General Tim Healy until 1932. Interestingly it was briefly nicknamed “Uncle Tim’s Cabin”. Then in 1937 the office of the President of Ireland was created. Eamon de Valera even proposed demolishing it. Thankfully that didn’t happen.

Douglas Hyde became the first president to reside here in 1938. Since then all subsequent presidents including the current Michael D Higgins have called this place home. Think of the countless state visits and official events held within these walls.

It is said that Áras an Uachtaráin’s design inspired the White House in Washington D.C. This is debated. The porticoes were added to the White House later. Still the connection is fascinating isn’t it?

Today Áras an Uachtaráin remains a significant symbol of Irish presidency and a stunning example of neoclassical architecture. Its white facade and elegant columns are a breathtaking sight. A visit here offers a glimpse into the life of the Irish president and a window into Ireland’s rich past. So take a moment soak in the atmosphere. This is more than just a building it’s a living testament to Irish history.
