Stepping into the world of The Players Theater is like stepping back in time. Here, on East Jefferson Avenue in Detroit, stands a Florentine Renaissance-style gem. The Players Theater isn’t just any theater. It’s a clubhouse, a time capsule, and a testament to the enduring power of amateur dramatics. Founded in 1911 by a group of Detroit businessmen, The Players initially roamed, performing at various venues. Imagine those early days, The Players, a men’s club, staging plays at the Detroit Athletic Club or the University Club. Finally, in 1925, they found their permanent home, a magnificent building designed by William E. Kapp. The Players Theater boasts a four-story stage, dressing rooms, prop storage, and even a formal meeting room upstairs. The exterior is adorned with ten sculpted gargoyles, guarding the tiled roof and the triple-arch bay framed by a wrought-iron balcony. But the real magic lies within. Art Deco murals by Paul HonorĂ© grace the auditorium walls, depicting a traveling troupe of troubadours. Eight smaller banners celebrate the crafts behind theatrical productions. The Players Theater is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living tradition. Members continue to stage “Frolics,” one-act plays performed on the first Saturday evening of each month, October through April. And in the Shakespearean tradition, all roles are played by men. This unique tradition adds another layer of intrigue to the already rich history of The Players Theater. The very ground beneath the theater whispers stories of the past. This was the site of the Battle of Bloody Run in 1763, a clash between Chief Pontiac and British forces. The Players Theater stands as a testament to Detroit’s rich history, a vibrant blend of the arts and the city’s captivating past. So, the next time you’re in Detroit, take a moment to appreciate The Players Theater, a place where the show goes on, echoing the spirit of amateur theater and the city’s enduring legacy.
