Cú Chulainn’s origin story is dramatic. He was born from an affair. His mother Deichtine was a queen. His father was the Celtic sun god Lugh. As a child he was called Setanta. He gained his famous name through a heroic act. Setanta killed a guard dog with his bare hands. The druids renamed him Cú Chulainn. It means “Cullan’s hound”. The druids were impressed by his strength.
The Phoenix Mural showcases part of the “Ulster Cycle”. It is a well-known series of myths. Queen Medb of Connaught plays a key role. She raises an army to attack Ulster. She wants to steal a sacred bull owned by Daire. A magical curse weakens Daire’s army. Only the 17-year-old Cú Chulainn and his friend can defend Ulster.
Cú Chulainn uses guerilla tactics. With his charioteer Laech he harasses the invaders. Supernatural entities aid him. He weakens the enemy before facing them directly. He invokes the right of single combat. At sacred fords he duels warrior after warrior. Cú Chulainn slays every adversary.
The Phoenix Mural presents key scenes. We see duels at the fords and the bulls of Ulster. Queen Medb appears along with the young Cú Chulainn killing the hound. The mural also shows a wounded Cú Chulainn tied to a tree. It depicts the hero’s end.
