A legacy of brick and limestone. That’s the Penn Club. Right here on West 44th Street.

The Penn Club isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to University of Pennsylvania’s ambition. A “home away from home” for its alumni. Initially conceived in 1900. It began life as a modest gathering space. Four rooms in the Royalton Hotel. It quickly outgrew those humble beginnings.

The club’s journey is a fascinating one. It moved several times. It occupied various spaces. Even sharing quarters with other clubs at various points in its history. It found temporary homes in the Hotel Stanley and several townhouses. For a period it even resided in the Biltmore Hotel. The Penn Club’s story reflects the ebb and flow of fortunes. Of changing neighborhoods in New York City.

But the narrative takes a dramatic turn. In 1989 the University of Pennsylvania acquired this building. This magnificent Beaux-Arts structure. Once the Yale Club of New York City. The acquisition marked a pivotal moment. A bold investment in creating a flagship club.

The renovation was extensive. The Penn Club added a three-story rooftop addition. This elevated its status on Clubhouse Row. The final cost of the building’s transformation was staggering. $15 million for the purchase and another $25 million for renovations. Generous donations from prominent alumni including the Lauder family and Ronald Perelman made this possible.

Today the Penn Club stands tall. It offers thirteen floors of amenities. From exquisite dining rooms to comfortable guest rooms. A business center caters to modern needs. A fitness center helps maintain a healthy lifestyle. Even a library offers a quiet retreat for members. A unique feature is its themed guest rooms. Each celebrating different alumni achievements.

The Penn Club’s significance extends beyond its walls. Its reciprocal agreements with over 150 clubs worldwide. It fosters a global network for Penn alumni. Its location places it at the heart of Midtown Manhattan. Near the Theatre District and Grand Central Terminal.

Donald Trump himself. A Wharton graduate. Contributed a significant donation to the club. This underscores the Penn Club’s enduring connection to influential figures. Its legacy continues. It welcomes members. It hosts events. The Penn Club is more than a social club. It’s a vibrant hub of networking and celebration for the University of Pennsylvania’s global family.
