Imagine stepping back in time to 1846 here at The Parsonage Plaque. It’s more than just a marker. It’s a portal to Charleston’s rich history.

The Parsonage at St. Johannes is a beautifully renovated compound. It is located in the heart of historic Charleston. Guests are transported to another time. They celebrate in one of the oldest sections of the city.

This grand home boasts large rooms on the first level. It features two iconic Charleston piazzas. An intimate courtyard with a surrounding garden is perfect for entertaining. The Parsonage acquired the building in 1919.

But let’s rewind a bit further. The great fire of 1838 destroyed much of Ansonborough. The residence at 50 Hasell Street rose from those ashes within a decade. There was a dwelling on the property as early as 1779.

After the fire, the owner had a vacant lot. German businessmen bought the land. They commissioned the construction of St. Johannes Lutheran Church. The doors opened in 1842.

A visiting planter built a 2-1/2 story home next to the church. It had a full story basement and a spacious attic. The first floor had a double parlor. Now those rooms function as a parlor and drawing room. They may be separated by handsome pocket doors. The first floor includes a dining room, kitchen, and powder room. The second floor has three bedrooms. Rooms on both floors open onto piazzas.

A carriage house is located in the rear of the property. It once served as the kitchen outbuilding. It is now connected to a church auxiliary building. It primarily houses Sunday school classrooms.

Other notable features include an ornate cast iron fence. A Palladian window looks onto the street. An eye-catching front entrance has etched glass inserts. Historic Charleston Foundation experts say the architectural style is transitional Italianate.

St. Johannes purchased The Parsonage in 1919. Since then, it has been home to few families. One pastor served the church for 37 years.

By 2014, the years had taken their toll. The last pastor in residence left in 2006. His successor owned a nearby home. The congregation agreed to restore the property.

The restoration included interior and exterior work. An English-style garden was created. More than 20 layers of paint were removed. This revealed beautifully detailed woodwork. A solid mahogany stair rail was uncovered.

Today, The Parsonage in Charleston is a vibrant part of St. Johannes. It is a beautiful and welcoming community asset. It also serves as a unique wedding venue. Up to 80 guests can stand. Up to 20 guests can be seated. It is perfect for wedding ceremonies and receptions. Rehearsal dinners and engagement parties can be hosted.

So, as you stand before The Parsonage Plaque. Remember the history that surrounds you. It’s a story of resilience, faith, and community. The Parsonage stands as a testament to Charleston’s enduring spirit.
