Gazing up at the The Parish Church of Saint Thomas, can you envision a ship gently rocking in the harbor? That unusual image connects to the story of this very church. Before The Parish Church of Saint Thomas graced this spot, a “floating chapel” served as a place of worship. This former Royal Navy vessel accommodated around 200 people. But time and dwindling funds forced its closure in 1845. Its sale for £200 contributed to the construction of The Parish Church of Saint Thomas. The foundation stone was laid in 1846. The Victorian early gothic style building, designed by architect Ewan Christian, officially opened on August 1, 1849. Inside The Parish Church of Saint Thomas, a visual feast awaits. Between 1896 and 1910, the Nicholson Brothers of Douglas adorned the chancel and nave walls with stunning murals. Inspired by Canon Savage, then-vicar, artist John Miller Nicholson transformed the church. These murals, covering approximately 520 square meters, are The Parish Church of Saint Thomas’s most distinctive feature. Other treasures include a war memorial designed by Archibald Knox, beautiful stained glass windows, a three-manual organ, and the bell and clock tower. The church continues to serve the community. Services are held every Sunday. Coffee mornings welcome visitors each Friday. This church is more than just stones and mortar. It is a testament to the community’s enduring faith. From a floating chapel to this magnificent structure, The Parish Church of Saint Thomas has played a vital role in the spiritual life of Douglas.
