“A simple whitewashed building with a Pepper Pot tower” That’s how they described the original St Matthew’s. Can you imagine it? This wasn’t always the grand stone structure before you. The Parish Church of Saint Matthew stands proudly today but its history is far richer and more complex.

The story of The Parish Church of Saint Matthew begins in 1708. It started as a humble Chapel of Ease. Bishop Wilson a great reformer established it. It was then a small part of Kirk Braddan parish. Douglas was still growing. The original St Matthew’s stood further down North Quay. It was a simple building with high pews and a three-decker pulpit. Opposite the Old Market Inn on Chapel Row it served the community. A drinking fountain from that era remains in the Old Market Hall a poignant reminder.

For almost two centuries the original St Matthew’s served Douglas. Then in 1879 things changed. St Matthew’s became a parish church in its own right. No longer just a chapel. It became a significant part of Douglas’s religious life.

But even a church needs updating. The original St Matthew’s fell into disrepair. Demolition was discussed as early as 1854. The marketplace needed expansion. But it was crucial to replace the beloved church. A new one would rise nearby.

The Reverend T A Taggart became vicar in 1878. His time saw a significant shift. St Matthew’s embraced the Anglo-Catholic tradition. It’s a tradition the church still follows today. Mr Taggart championed the poor. He kept the church open daily. He even abolished pew rents which decreased his own income. A testament to his commitment. His tenure oversaw both the demolition of the old church and the building of the one before you.

The present church opened in 1898. Construction wasn’t fully complete until 1908. Archibald Knox designed the impressive WWI memorial you see here in the grounds. It was replaced in granite in 1994. It bears witness to the sacrifices made in the Great War. The noticeboard near the entrance also bears Knox’s design. Note the replacement fish carving inside the porch. It’s kept safe under lock and key.

So stand here. Look at The Parish Church of Saint Matthew. This grand building reflects centuries of faith. It demonstrates adaptation. It represents service to the community. Its story is testament to the enduring spirit of Douglas and its people.
