Established in 1896, The Owl Club at Harvard University has a rich and intriguing history. The Owl Club began as a secret society known as Alpha Epsilon, meaning “Pipe and Mug” in Greek. Its founders, including Dudley Hall Bradlee Jr. and Frazier Curtis, envisioned a unique fraternity. The Owl Club quickly evolved. In 1897, it shed its secrecy, becoming the Phi Delta Psi Club. The Owl Club held meetings in various locations before finally settling into its current home at 30 Holyoke Street in 1905. The Owl Club’s Georgian Revival clubhouse, designed by James Purdon, stands as a testament to its enduring legacy. The Owl Club officially adopted its current name in 1916. The name, “The Owl,” is an abbreviation of the club’s original Greek name. Over the years, The Owl Club has initiated over 1,200 members, each contributing to its unique story. A symbol of exclusivity and tradition, The Owl Club’s black tie, adorned with green owls, is a mark of membership. It’s worn with pride during weekly dinners and formal events, connecting generations of Harvard men.
