Why did the 64th District School House keep changing its name? We’re standing before The Old School House Memorial Plaque, a monument to a building that couldn’t seem to settle on an identity. The plaque commemorates the schoolhouse that stood on this very spot, at 6200 South and Redwood Road, beginning in 1905. The Old School House Memorial Plaque itself has had a bit of a journey, by the way. The original plaque was mounted on the Baptist Church that was later built on the school’s site. A street-widening project led to the church’s demolition. The monument crumbled during its relocation efforts, but thankfully the plaque was salvaged. It was then remounted in 2010 on a new base, just west of this spot. The Old School House, a red brick building, had two large rooms on the west side and one large room on the east side. In just four years, it cycled through three names. It started as the 64th District School in 1905. Then, in September 1906, it became the South Taylorsville School. Finally, in May 1908, it adopted the name Madison School. This final name stuck until the site was sold to Bennion Ward in 1921. The Old School House also saw a procession of principals. W. R. Wilson served twice, from 1905 to 1907 and again from 1913 to 1915. Elizabeth Bennion led the school from 1907 to 1909. Zeretta Frame took the reins in 1909, followed by Clarissa Saunders in 1910 and Emma J. Webster in 1911. Alta Stookey rounded out the list, serving as principal from 1912 to 1913. The Old School House, under its various names, educated generations of Taylorsville students. This plaque stands as a quiet reminder of those bygone days.
