Why is The O’Connell Tower so tall? The O’Connell Tower dominates the landscape of Glasnevin Cemetery. This towering monument, standing at 180 feet, including the 7-foot cross at its apex, wasn’t erected for mere grandeur. It stands as a testament to Daniel O’Connell, a giant of Irish history. O’Connell wasn’t a warrior king or a literary hero. He was a peaceful champion for Catholic rights in Ireland, a political force who fought tirelessly for Home Rule and equality. For 50 years, he rallied and campaigned. At the end of his life, he embarked on a pilgrimage to Italy. Sadly, he never completed it, passing away on foreign soil. But O’Connell had one final wish: to have his body buried in Ireland, but his heart laid to rest in Rome. Today, his remains lie in the crypt at the base of The O’Connell Tower, a poignant reminder of his enduring legacy. His descendants also rest in the crypt, forever bound to the man who fought for their faith and freedom. Over the years, The O’Connell Tower has withstood the test of time and even survived a bombing in 1971. Today, restored to its former glory, it stands watch over Glasnevin Cemetery, a beacon of hope and a symbol of O’Connell’s enduring message of peace and unity.
