King Robert Bruce even rested here in 1313, before his siege of Castle Rushen. Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries brought an end to the nuns’ reign in 1540. But the story didn’t end there. The estate passed through different hands, from the Calcots to the Heywoods and then to the Taubmans. In 1823, John Taubman commissioned a new mansion, a grand statement in Strawberry Hill Gothic Revival style. The West Gate boasts red sandstone gateposts, bearing the Taubman coat of arms, restored after a traffic accident.
