Across from the Moses C. Levy House Plaque, a grand three-story structure once stood. This was not the original Moses C. Levy House. The Moses C. Levy House Plaque commemorates a man known for an act of bravery. Moses C. Levy, a Polish-born merchant, resided in Charleston from 1811 to 1816. He constructed a home on East Bay Street. Years later, in 1838, a devastating fire swept through Charleston. Levy risked his life to save the sacred scrolls of Beth Elohim Synagogue. This heroic act cemented his place in Charleston’s history. The Moses C. Levy House Plaque serves as a reminder of his courage and contribution to the community. The original house, sadly, was lost to another fire in 1838. Levy secured a loan to rebuild, creating a commercial building on King Street. This new structure, though not his residence, carries his legacy. Today, the Moses C. Levy House Plaque connects us to a remarkable individual. He is remembered not for the house he built, but for the heritage he preserved.
