Eleven glowing orbs illuminate Münster’s night. They are the moons of The Moon in Alabama: Kyoto Sculpture. Each a bright beacon above a whimsical seating area. These aren’t just any benches. They’re art.

The Moon in Alabama is more than a collection of sculptures. It’s a globally-connected art project. Internationally renowned artist Tobias Rehberger created this masterpiece in 2014. He transformed ordinary grey utility boxes into vibrant and playful seating areas.

The project’s cleverness lies in its illumination. Each sculpture is named after a different city. When the moon rises in that city it also lights up its corresponding sculpture in Münster. This creates a fascinating and unique connection between Münster and eleven other places around the world. Think of it as a celestial network. A moon-lit conversation spanning continents.

The initiative wasn’t simply a stroke of artistic genius. It was a collaboration. The Immobilien- und Standortgemeinschaft (ISG) Bahnhofsviertel Münster e V and the City of Münster worked together. They aimed to improve the area around the railway station. They used innovative funding from various sources including the Ministry for Construction Housing Urban Development and Transport of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Dr Gail Kirkpatrick curated the project. She is the director of the Kunsthalle Münster. The ISG is responsible for maintenance of the sculptures for ten years. Partnerships between sponsors and sculptures ensure ongoing care.

The sculptures aren’t just beautiful. They’re functional. They invite people to sit relax and interact. They’ve transformed what were once overlooked urban elements into vibrant social spaces. Each unique sculpture tells a story. A story connecting Münster to the wider world. A story illuminated by the moon.

So gaze upwards. Let the light of The Moon in Alabama: Kyoto Sculpture illuminate your understanding of art and urban transformation. Enjoy the moment. Enjoy the connection.
