Isn’t it fascinating how art can transform the mundane into the extraordinary? Right before you stands “The Moon in Alabama: Jericho,” a testament to this very idea. This captivating sculpture, conceived by the internationally acclaimed artist Tobias Rehberger, isn’t your typical art installation. It’s part of a larger project called “The Moon in Alabama,” which ingeniously breathes life into eleven unassuming distribution boxes scattered around Münster’s main railway station. Launched in 2013, the project embodies the city’s dedication to promoting “art in public spaces.” You see, Rehberger envisioned these often overlooked grey boxes as blank canvases brimming with artistic potential. He adorned them with a whimsical arrangement of tubes that seem to sprout from the ground, playfully mimicking the intricate network of cables hidden beneath the city’s surface. But the real magic unfolds at night. Each sculpture is crowned with its own “moon,” a luminous orb that illuminates when the moon rises over a specific city elsewhere in the world. “The Moon in Alabama: Jericho,” for instance, shares its lunar cycle with Jericho.
