Before you stands the Molony Building Plaque. A simple plaque it may seem yet it holds a captivating story. This unassuming marker tells the tale of a building a family and a piece of Charleston’s vibrant past.

The Molony Building itself boasts a rich history dating back to at least 1694. The land on which it stands was granted to Joseph Pendarvis. Over the years it changed hands many times. By 1854 four small brick structures occupied the lot. These were sadly destroyed in the devastating fire of 1861. The land lay vacant until around 1867.

Then a new building arose a three-story brick structure. It wasn’t just any building though. Its ground floor housed a grocery store. Upstairs was the Molony family’s residence. The most intriguing detail? James Molony son of John and Mary ran a saloon on the ground floor. This saloon is believed to have been Charleston’s first Irish bar. Imagine the lively atmosphere the clinking glasses the laughter and stories shared within those walls.

James Molony ran his successful business until 1910. The Molony family continued to lease the first floor to various businesses until 1919. Today the building continues its lively history. It now houses Bocci’s Italian Restaurant a testament to Charleston’s enduring spirit of hospitality.

The Molony Building Plaque is more than just a marker. It is a window into the past. It whispers stories of a family’s enterprise the rise and fall of businesses and Charleston’s ever-changing landscape. It reminds us that even the smallest details can reveal the grand narratives of a city’s soul. Take a moment to appreciate this piece of Charleston’s unique heritage.
