Can a church be born from a whisper? For The Methodist Church Ghana, Ebenezer Society in Accra, it began with a conversation. The Methodist Church Ghana, Ebenezer Society’s story isn’t found in Accra, but rather, across the ocean in Hyattsville, Maryland, USA. In 1992, four individuals felt a calling. Very Rev. Dr. Joseph Kow Ghunney, the late Dr. Joseph Attah-Quartey, Kofi Abruquah, and Cecilia Ghunney saw a need. They envisioned a spiritual home for Ghanaians in the Washington D.C. area, a place resonating with the Methodist traditions of their homeland. Thus, The Methodist Church Ghana, Ebenezer Society was born. Initially, twenty-one souls gathered for their first service at the Free United Methodist Church in Layhill, Maryland. The Methodist Church Ghana, Ebenezer Society quickly outgrew this space. Within eight months, they relocated to the First United Methodist Church in Hyattsville. Growth continued, necessitating another move to the National Wesleyan Church Annex in 1997. The Methodist Church Ghana, Ebenezer Society’s journey wasn’t without its trials. Disagreements and differing visions led to two splits within the congregation, resulting in the formation of new churches. Yet, The Methodist Church Ghana, Ebenezer Society persevered, its mission unwavering. The church also played a pivotal role in the growth of Ghana Methodism in North America, helping to establish other churches and even an association of Ghanaian Methodist Church Choirs. The Methodist Church Ghana, Ebenezer Society eventually found a home at St. Matthew’s Anglican Episcopal Church in 2003. A remarkable bequest from Frances Marsh allowed them to purchase a Mission House, a testament to the enduring spirit of the church. Though its physical location is not in Accra, The Methodist Church Ghana, Ebenezer Society’s story reflects the strength and resilience of the Ghanaian Methodist community.
