Conceived as more than just a shopping destination, The Mall Athens is a landmark. It reshaped the city’s retail landscape. This colossal structure opened its doors on November 25 2005. The Mall Athens quickly became a symbol of modern Athens.
Before The Mall Athens stood here, this land was grazing ground. Sheep roamed freely. The 2004 Athens Olympic Games spurred massive changes. New roads and rail lines transformed the area into prime real estate.
Interestingly, this land was intended for social housing. Instead, it was sold at a discount to Lamda Development. This Latsis Group subsidiary then erected The Mall Athens. Its construction became embroiled in controversy.
A sign outside once read Olympic Media Village. This alluded to the initial plan. The Mall was meant to house foreign journalists during the Olympics. Yet, it opened a year after the games concluded.
The agreement stipulated the construction of housing for journalists. In exchange, laws were altered. These changes allowed Lamda to build a giant shopping center. Some considered these terms unconstitutional.
At one point, The Mall Athens was even called the largest illegal construction in Europe. The Greek Supreme Court ruled the initial laws unconstitutional in 2003. They ordered construction to stop. However, the ruling was ignored.
Political figures allegedly introduced legislation favorable to The Mall. These laws aimed to bypass the Supreme Court’s decision. Despite the legal challenges, The Mall Athens was inaugurated in November 2005.
Today, The Mall Athens boasts over 200 outlets. These include stores, restaurants, cafes and entertainment venues. It spans four levels covering 58500 square meters. There are also 90000 square meters of underground space.
The Mall Athens offers many amenities. There is access for handicapped persons. A children’s play area and babysitting services are available. You can also find a first aid area and ATMs. Free WiFi is provided to all visitors.
Getting here is easy. The Mall Athens is accessible by metro and suburban railway. Just get off at Neratziotissa station. If driving, follow signs to OAKA from Kifissias Avenue. Alternatively, use exit 11 from the Attiki Odos ring road.
On the third level, you will find Village Cinema multiplex. There is also an amusement park and a food court. The Mall Athens truly offers a comprehensive experience.
