A skull above a small entrance. That’s what first caught my eye at the Main Parish Church of the Assumption in the centre of Budapest. This isn’t just any church. It’s a place where history whispers from the stones.

The Main Parish Church of the Assumption isn’t just a pretty building. It stands as a testament to centuries of faith and upheaval. Its location is remarkable. It sits only centimetres from a bustling road. Legend says it has never been moved. The road gently curves to accommodate this ancient church. This tells you something about the reverence held for this sacred site.

Built atop the ruins of a Roman warehouse. This spot once housed a Roman military control room around 350 AD. You can still see the remnants today. It’s incredible to think about those layers of history. The church as it stands today began in the 11th century. King Stephen I had it constructed to honour the Virgin Mary.

Think about this. Matthias Corvinus was elected King of Hungary within these very walls. This happened in 1458. The next day his election was confirmed by the people voting for him. This took place on the frozen Danube. Then the Ottomans used this church as a mosque. Evidence of this time remains in the form of a Mihrab in the choir.

Franz Liszt. Yes that Franz Liszt. He lived in the rectory. He conducted his own works in the Main Parish Church of the Assumption. He played this organ. This magnificent instrument has 5261 pipes. It was built in 1932.

Down below lies a hidden world. A lower church. It showcases the findings of recent excavations. You can see Roman remains and Medieval walls. There are statues of the twelve apostles. The Madonna of Nuremberg is there too. A truly breathtaking work of art. This is where the human remains uncovered during the excavations are buried.

The Main Parish Church of the Assumption is more than just a church. It’s a living museum. A vibrant centre for faith. It’s a place where history and faith intertwine. It’s a place where you can stand before a structure. This structure has quietly witnessed two thousand years of Budapest’s tumultuous past.
