Ever wondered where birds find refuge in a bustling city? The Jerusalem Bird Observatory is that haven. It sits right in central Jerusalem. This urban oasis is nestled between the Knesset and the Supreme Court.

The Jerusalem Bird Observatory began in 1994. Naturalist Amir Balaban and ornithologist Gidon Perleman founded it. The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel supported them.

This 5,000 square foot plot attracts many birds. More than 500 million birds migrate through Israel every spring and fall. The Jerusalem Bird Observatory is strategically located on their route between Africa and Eurasia. It lies along the Great Rift Valley. Two-thirds of bird species seen here are migratory. Around 30% are permanent residents.

The Jerusalem Bird Observatory serves as the national bird banding center. Trained volunteers band two hundred birds each day. This happens during the spring and fall migrations.

The Gutman Center addition opened in 2011. It provides a home for birds and bees. Gazelles also live in the park.

The Jerusalem Bird Observatory is open to everyone. Small wooden observation posts are open 24/7. You can visit anytime. The park is free.

The Jerusalem Bird Observatory has recorded rare bird sightings. An eyebrowed thrush was seen in 2007. A taiga flycatcher was banded in April 2007. A hawfinch was banded in June 2011.

The Jerusalem Bird Observatory strives to protect urban wildlife sites. Its ecological research and educational activities are non-profit. The JBO offers eco-experiences to visitors. You can enjoy bird watching. You can also learn about bird migration in Israel. Presentations are available for groups and individuals.

The JBO provides unique opportunities for Israeli students. Children experience nature first-hand. They have close encounters with ringed birds. They enjoy birdwatching tours. There is even a birdwatching club. Lectures cover bird life and nature conservation. Students learn about current research at the JBO.
