“EBT is the Future!” proclaims The High School of Enterprise, Business, and Technology’s motto. The High School of Enterprise, Business, and Technology opened its doors in 1996. It stands on the fourth floor of the Grand Street Educational Campus. This campus is at 850 Grand Street in Williamsburg Brooklyn.
The High School of Enterprise, Business, and Technology’s story is one of renewal. It rose from the closure of Eastern District High School. Eastern District closed due to low graduation rates and violence. In its place four new schools emerged including The High School of Enterprise, Business, and Technology.
Known as EBT to students and faculty it quickly distinguished itself. EBT and its fellow schools were the first born into the SURR list. SURR means Schools Under Registration Review. Just a year after its first graduating class EBT was the first to leave the list.
Juan S. Mendez is the founder of The High School of Enterprise, Business, and Technology. He built it with the help of Yvette Wharton and Hipolito Fernandez. Before EBT Mendez was at Stuyvesant High School.
To graduate from The High School of Enterprise, Business, and Technology students need 40 credits. The curriculum includes English, Physical Education, Math, and Health. Also American History, Art, Foreign Language, Science, and Global History are part of it.
The High School of Enterprise, Business, and Technology concentrates on business and technology. Students choose from four programs. These are The Academy of Hospitality and Tourism, Computer Networking, Business and Finance, and Gateway.
The Academy of Hospitality and Tourism focuses on management and entrepreneurship. Students intern at top hotels and corporations. Computer Networking teaches the inner workings of computers. Business and Finance prepares students for corporate careers. Gateway Mathematics and Science Institute focuses on science and math courses.
The High School of Enterprise, Business, and Technology has a vibrant performing arts program. It features five bands and AP Music Theory. EBT is one of only twelve NYC high schools offering this full sequence.
Extra-curricular activities abound. The High School of Enterprise, Business, and Technology offers Drama, DECCA, and Model United Nations. Sports teams include football baseball soccer basketball volleyball softball and golf. These are shared with other schools on the campus.
The campus itself was state-of-the-art when erected in 1981. It featured a swimming pool an auto shop and early computer labs. The High School of Enterprise, Business, and Technology uses its “460 Complex” as an art gallery. Student artworks of varying kinds are displayed.
Today The High School of Enterprise, Business, and Technology continues to grow. More students apply each year. The school partners with Woodhull Hospital for an on-campus clinic. Rebecca Pawel novelist and Edgar Award winner teaches English and Spanish here. The High School of Enterprise, Business, and Technology stands as a beacon of opportunity. It is a place where students prepare for their future.
