Did the trees whisper secrets to Ossian? Here at The Hermitage, it’s easy to believe they did. The Hermitage, officially known as The Hermitage Pleasure Ground, isn’t just a place, it’s an experience. This National Trust for Scotland protected site in Dunkeld, Perth and Kinross, whispers stories of history and nature. Created in the 18th century by John Murray, the third Duke of Atholl, The Hermitage was a tribute to the legendary blind bard, Ossian. Imagine the Duke strolling these very paths, seeking inspiration amongst the towering trees. The Hermitage is home to captivating follies like Ossian’s Hall of Mirrors and Ossian’s Cave. These whimsical structures add a touch of magic to the landscape. The hermit’s cave, built around 1760, has its own peculiar story. The third Earl of Breadalbane built it and even advertised for a permanent hermit, though the search proved unsuccessful. Years later, in 1869, a guide named Donald Anderson embraced the hermit role, donning a beard of lichens and animal skin clothing, adding a touch of eccentricity to The Hermitage. The Hermitage is also known for its magnificent Douglas-fir trees. One of these giants was the second tree in Britain to reach a height of 200 feet in 1980. Sadly, this majestic tree, known as the Hermitage Douglas-fir, fell victim to high winds in 2017. However, its legacy lives on in the other towering trees that grace this landscape. As you explore The Hermitage today, you can wander along various paths, each offering a unique perspective on this enchanting place. The most popular walk leads to Ossian’s Hall, a journey of just 0.6 miles. There’s even a pass-for-all route for wheelchair accessibility, ensuring everyone can experience the magic of The Hermitage. From here, a network of 30 miles of footpaths extends beyond The Hermitage, connecting to various parts of Dunkeld, a testament to the enduring appeal of this historic landscape. The original riverside path has a clever design. It purposely veers away from the river to heighten anticipation for the stunning Black Linn Falls. A wider, parallel path was created to accommodate horse-drawn carriages, a glimpse into the elegant past. Near the 1770 Hermitage Bridge, a Cedar of Lebanon, believed to be the oldest tree at The Hermitage, stands as a silent witness to centuries of history. The Hermitage isn’t just a place; it’s a journey through time, a place where nature and history intertwine.
