Can you imagine the battles that unfolded on this very hill? Right here, in front of us, stands the Harel-Brigade Memorial, a poignant tribute to the soldiers who fought bravely for control of Jerusalem. Radar Hill, as this place was once known, was a strategic point during the 1948 War of Independence, a battleground where battles were fought and lives were lost. The Harel Brigade, under the command of Yitzhak Rabin, made 23 attempts to conquer this hill. Though Rabin, who later became Israel’s fifth Prime Minister, fought with bravery, they held the position for only four days before being defeated. The Harel- Brigade Memorial, a tall observation tower, designed by architect Arieh Sharon and his son Eldad, stands upon this historic ground, a reminder of sacrifices made and victories achieved. The tower is constructed to resemble two radar disks, symbolizing the hill’s past. From the top, you can see beautiful views of Jerusalem, the city the soldiers fought so fiercely to protect. The surrounding area also holds the remnants of bunkers and communication trenches. At the foot of the monument, combat vehicles and tanks, used in the battles for Jerusalem, are on display. As you stand here and gaze at the memorial, let the story of the Harel Brigade and their valiant efforts come alive in your mind. The monument is a symbol of courage, resilience, and sacrifice, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Harel Brigade that continues to inspire generations of Israelis.
