Is that a pagoda enshrining hair? Yes, you are looking at The hair-inhumed pagoda in Guangzhou. It is a repository of profound Buddhist history. This unique pagoda stands as a testament to a pivotal moment in Chinese Zen Buddhism.

The hair-inhumed pagoda is within the Guangxiao Temple. This temple predates Guangzhou city itself. The temple has evolved over 1,700 years. It transitioned from a private house during the Western Han Dynasty to a Zen Buddhist Temple during the Southern Song Dynasty.

Our story centers on Huineng. He was the Sixth Patriarch of Chan Buddhism. In 676, Huineng arrived at Guangxiao Temple. There, he encountered two monks debating about a flag waving in the wind. They argued whether the flag or the wind was moving. Huineng famously declared, “Neither. Your mind is moving.”

The abbot recognized Huineng’s wisdom. The abbot then shaved Huineng’s head. This act initiated him into monkhood. The hair-inhumed pagoda was built to inter Huineng’s hair. It is a memorial to his enlightenment.

The hair-inhumed pagoda stands 7.8 meters tall. It is an octagonal, seven-storey structure. The pagoda is made of stone, sand, and brick. Each level features niches with seated Buddha statues. These are considered fine stone carvings.

Guangxiao Temple has other attractions. The Mountain Gate has statues called “Ha” and “Heng”. They are also known as “Blower” and “Snorter”. Bodhidharma’s well is also here. Tradition says he washed Shakyamuni Buddha’s bowl there. Do not miss the East and West Iron Towers.

Consider the wider significance of the Guangxiao Temple and The hair-inhumed pagoda. They offer a lens into Chinese Buddhism. The architecture reflects cultural and local history. The many halls and relics enrich our understanding.

The hair-inhumed pagoda encapsulates a transformative moment. Huineng’s tonsure symbolizes a shift in understanding. His teachings emphasize the power of introspection. As you reflect on this, remember that true movement begins within.
