The Guardians Institute was founded, in 2006, as a tribute to a man named Donald Harrison Sr. He was a Big Chief among the Mardi Gras Indians, who are a unique part of the city’s cultural heritage. Known for his love of knowledge, Mr. Harrison traveled around the world introducing a new generation to the traditions of his ancestors. The Guardians Institute reflects that legacy by striving to teach children, young adults, and the community, about the arts, music and cultural traditions of New Orleans. The building itself is a testament to the strength of the spirit of New Orleans. It’s a performance pavilion, education center, and museum, all rolled into one.
