Deep within the heart of San Antonio, nestled along the Museum Reach of the River Walk, lies a place of enchantment. The Grotto by Carlos Cortes is a testament to the artistry and magic of faux bois, the art of creating concrete structures that mimic the intricate beauty of nature. The Grotto isn’t just a sculpture; it’s an experience. It beckons you to step into a world where concrete transforms into cascading waterfalls, craggy cave walls, and winding passageways.

The Grotto by Carlos Cortes is a relatively recent addition to San Antonio’s artistic landscape. It was commissioned by the San Antonio River Foundation as part of the River Improvements Project. This three-story marvel is more than just visually stunning. It offers recessed lighting, benches for quiet contemplation, and even a picnic area where you can soak in the atmosphere. The entrance is marked by the imposing jaws of a giant jaguar head, also crafted from concrete.

Carlos Cortes, the artist behind The Grotto, carries on a family tradition of trabajo rustico. He learned the craft from his father, Màximo, who in turn learned from a distant relative and renowned faux bois artist, Dionicio Rodriguez. Cortes uses simple tools: trowels, a wheelbarrow, a shovel, and his bare hands. He shapes rebar into the skeleton of the piece and then meticulously applies layers of concrete, each layer building upon the last until the final coat bears the incredibly lifelike details. He often stains the finished concrete to complete the illusion of wood, bark, and stone.

The Grotto by Carlos Cortes is a testament to the enduring power of artistic vision. It’s a place where the lines between nature and art blur, where concrete becomes a canvas for expressing the beauty of the natural world. Across the river, complementing The Grotto, Cortes has also created a palapa and two benches. These pieces, along with the grotto itself, were gifted to the city of San Antonio as part of its public art collection. As you leave The Grotto by Carlos Cortes, carry with you the wonder of this unique space. Remember the way the light filters through the openings in the grotto’s “ceiling” and the cool touch of the concrete benches. It’s a reminder that art can be found in the most unexpected places, transforming ordinary materials into extraordinary experiences.
