Let’s delve into its history. Tsar Alexander II granted permission for its construction in 1869. This was in response to a request. Wealthy philanthropist Joseph Günzburg asked for it. He wanted a central place of worship for the Jewish community.
However the construction faced many restrictions. The synagogue could not be near Christian churches. It also could not be near government roads used by the Tsars. The building’s height was limited to 47 meters. The architects wanted 65 meters.
The Grand Choral Synagogue’s architecture is a mix of styles. It blends Moorish Revival and Byzantine Revival elements. Influential art critic V. V. Stasov requested Arabesque motifs. The result is an eclectic and beautiful design. Poet Osip Mandelstam even described it as a lush strangler fig tree.
During the First World War, the Jewish community organized a 100-bed hospital. It was for the wounded of all religions. This was on the synagogue’s premises. The yeshiva building nearby also served as a medical facility.
The Soviet era brought challenges. The authorities restricted bank accounts. They also dissolved the Saint Petersburg Jewish Community.
During the Second World War, the Grand Choral Synagogue was bombed. This happened during the Siege of Leningrad. Yet the hospital continued to operate. The Jewish community survived the siege. They persevered through years of oppression.

In 1999, the Safra family donated US$5 million. This allowed for the synagogue’s reconstruction. It was then renamed The Edmond J. Safra Grand Choral Synagogue. However, it is more commonly known as Bolshaya Sinagoga. This means the Grand Synagogue.
Inside, the Great Hall accommodates 1200 worshipers. Women’s galleries are on three sides. Well-known cantors from around the world have performed here.
