The Government Pharmaceutical Organization

The GPO emerged from the fusion of two existing entities: a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant operating since 1939 and the Pharmaceutical Department established in 1901. The GPO Act of 1966 formalized this merger, setting the stage for the organization’s vital role in the nation’s health. The Government Pharmaceutical Organization’s primary mission is to produce and supply essential medicines and pharmaceutical products, bolstering Thailand’s public health infrastructure. This commitment aligns with the national public health policy. The GPO’s impact extends beyond manufacturing. It plays a key role in research and development, constantly striving to innovate new pharmaceutical products and medical supplies to meet the country’s evolving needs. The Government Pharmaceutical Organization also actively works to maintain affordable prices for essential pharmaceutical products and medical supplies, ensuring accessibility for all Thai citizens. By 2009, the GPO’s annual revenue reached approximately $260 million USD, a testament to its growth and reach. With a portfolio of over 300 pharmaceutical products and a dedicated staff of around 2,100, the GPO’s influence is undeniable. The Government Pharmaceutical Organization also plays a crucial role in Thailand’s preparedness for potential pandemics. Its Biological Product Department focuses on the production of vaccines and antisera, including the Japanese encephalitis vaccine and antivenoms for tetanus and snake bites. They even played a role in developing an H1N1 vaccine. The Government Pharmaceutical Organization’s vision is clear: to be a leading force in pharmaceutical products and medical supplies, benefiting Thai society with essential and fairly priced healthcare solutions.
