In 1845, a seed of an idea was planted. This seed blossomed into The Glasgow Academy. It began in the Star Hotel, George Square, where William Campbell of Tullichewan and Free Church ministers dreamt of an “Academic Institution in the City.” The Glasgow Academy we see today stands as a testament to their vision. The Glasgow Academy is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living, breathing entity woven into the fabric of Glasgow’s history. Founded as an all-boys school, it embraced co-education in 1991, merging with Westbourne School for Girls. This union not only diversified the student body, but also added a splash of Westbourne’s distinctive purple to The Glasgow Academy’s badge and tartan. The Glasgow Academy also extends its reach beyond these walls. It has preparatory school sites in Milngavie and Newlands, creating a network of learning across Glasgow. The Glasgow Academy has a rich sporting history. Did you know the Scottish Rugby Union was founded here in 1873? Imagine the discussions, the plans, the energy that filled these very grounds, giving birth to a sport that would captivate a nation. Fast forward to 2015, and The Glasgow Academy unveiled the Saunders Centre, a state-of-the-art science and technology building. This modern addition complements the grand main building, erected in 1878, which houses the senior school library, a treasure trove of knowledge. Look closely at the school’s war memorial. This poignant tribute, designed by former pupil Alexander Nisbet Paterson in 1922, commemorates the 327 former pupils lost in the First World War. The Glasgow Academy’s dedication to education extends beyond the traditional curriculum. It was the first school in the UK to receive the Diana Gold Award for Anti-Bullying. It also holds the Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award from the Ministry of Defence, highlighting its commitment to supporting those who serve. The Glasgow Academy has nurtured many remarkable individuals, from literary giants like J.M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan, to scientific pioneers like Nobel laureate William Ramsay, who discovered Argon. This institution continues to inspire and equip its students to make their mark on the world.
