What happened to the congregation that built The Free Church? This grand building before you has seen quite a journey. Founded in 1800 as a Methodist church, it was originally known as Wesley Chapel. The congregation, however, experienced a split in 1816. This left a smaller group who found their grand chapel too large for their needs. This led to a fascinating turn of events. The church was handed over to the Church of Ireland’s Archbishop of Dublin, William Magee. It was later reconsecrated in 1828 under its new denomination. The story doesn’t end there. The Free Church served as a haven for those seeking solace and community. In the 19th century, as the surrounding neighborhood declined, the congregation dwindled. They eventually relocated to the burgeoning suburbs. The once lively church fell silent in 1988, its doors closing after years of service. Yet The Free Church found new life. After refurbishment, it was transformed into Pavee Point. Today, it serves as the Dublin Travellers’ Education and Development Group, continuing its legacy as a place of community and support.
