A giant eye stares back at you from the Main Street District. This, my friends, is The Eye sculpture in Dallas. The Eye has been watching over this spot since 2013. It’s a 30-foot tall, unblinking, blue eye, made of fiberglass, resin, and steel. The Eye is hard to miss and has become quite the social media star. The Eye sculpture was created by artist Tony Tasset. It’s actually a replica of his own eye. Tasset has said there’s no deep meaning behind it. He simply wanted to create something universally recognizable. Before The Eye took up residence, this very spot held a piece of Dallas history: the Praetorian Building. Built in 1909, the Praetorian was considered Dallas’ first skyscraper. It was a 15-story neo-classical tower that briefly held the title of tallest building in Texas. Unfortunately, the Praetorian fell into disrepair during an economic downturn in the 1990s. It was eventually demolished in 2012 by Tim Headington, the owner of The Joule Hotel. A popular legend says that Headington acquired The Eye after neighbors complained about a proposed garage on the site, calling it an eyesore. Today, The Eye serves as a backdrop for events and even weddings. It’s become a unique landmark in Dallas, a city known for embracing the odd and strange.
