How many train depots do you know that are also art galleries? The Depot Art Gallery in Littleton is one of a kind. Housed in an original 1888 train depot the station now serves Littleton’s arts and crafts scene. The Depot Art Gallery is more than just a gallery. It is a testament to community spirit and artistic vision.
Imagine Littleton in the late 1960s. The railroad ceased its route through town. The Santa Fe Depot faced demolition. But a group of ten artists saw potential. They envisioned a new life for the historic building as an art gallery. These artists secured local funding. They devoted countless hours to restoring the building. The Depot was moved from the train tracks to its current home on Powers Avenue. In 1969, it became a Colorado Historic Landmark.
The Depot Art Gallery primarily houses the work of the Littleton Fine Arts Guild. This guild has grown from the original ten artists to over 60 members today. Artists are juried into the guild. They volunteer their time to run the gallery. The Depot offers a free space for the Littleton community to enjoy art. Inside The Depot Art Gallery you will find paintings and photographs. You will also discover greeting cards and jewelry. The Depot showcases a broad cross-section of media. There are paintings from watercolor to oil to acrylics. You can also see pastel pictures, etchings and silk paintings. Jewelry, glass and ceramic sculptures and fiber arts are all on display. Woodworking and photography round out the collection.
Most of the station’s windows, floors and roof are original. In 1978, an 1898 caboose was added. This caboose displays award-winning Colorado Railroad photography. The wooden framework and gabled roof are important to the depot’s design. The gallery is owned by the City of Littleton. The city maintains the exterior. This allows artists to showcase and sell their work inside. The historic structure houses the Littleton Fine Arts gallery. About 60 artists contribute fine art in over 11 rotating shows per year.
Exhibits change frequently at The Depot Art Gallery. Active members get their work featured in the gallery space. Everything you see is for sale. Each sale benefits both the depot and the artist. Every month features a new “artist of the month.” Their work is showcased for the public and members. Special events are held throughout the year. Popular events include shows for new artists and young talent. There are also interpretive art shows and holiday arts and craft fairs.
The Depot Art Gallery also hosts the yearly All Colorado Show. Non-members throughout Colorado are invited to apply for entry. Another popular annual event is the recently debuted Colorado Aperture Show. This show is exclusive to photographers. The Littleton Fine Arts Guild also has non-gallery exhibit venues. Members can show and sell their art in these venues. They offer classes and workshops for continued education for community members. The Depot itself is available to rent.

The Depot Art Gallery is open five days a week. It is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Admission is always free.
