“Two hundred thousand pounds?” a man in a tattered coat might have exclaimed back in 1791. He’d be standing right here, likely marveling at the newly finished Custom House. The Custom House. It’s not just a grand building with a name that speaks for itself; it represents a pivotal chapter in Dublin’s story. Designed by the renowned James Gandon, this neoclassical masterpiece arose from the ambition of John Beresford, Ireland’s first commissioner of revenue. Imagine the commotion as every available mason in Dublin toiled away, shaping Portland stone into intricate facades. Think of the controversy it stirred, deemed too extravagant by some and a shift in the city’s very heart. Yet, on November 7th, 1791, the Custom House opened its doors. Sadly, tragedy struck in 1921. The Irish Republican Army, in a blow against British rule, set the building ablaze. Imagine the flames engulfing Gandon’s meticulous interiors, the dome collapsing inwards as priceless historical records turned to ash. The Custom House you see today, while resurrected from the ashes, bears the marks of that fiery past. Look closely; the rebuilt dome, crafted from Irish Ardbraccan limestone, stands in stark contrast to the original Portland stone. It’s a scar, a reminder of Ireland’s turbulent journey to independence, but also a testament to its resilience.
