Wondering where some of Hollywood’s most iconic films were made? You’re standing in front of The Culver Studios. This place isn’t just a studio. It’s a living, breathing piece of Hollywood history.

The Culver Studios, located in Culver City, California, has been a cornerstone of the entertainment industry since 1918. Silent movie pioneer Thomas H. Ince originally built it. He envisioned a studio unlike any other.

Ince acquired land from real estate developer Harry Culver. Then he established Thomas H. Ince Studios. The architectural firm of Meyer & Holler designed and constructed it.

Look at that grand building before you. That’s “The Mansion.” It was the first structure built on the lot. Ince modeled it after George Washington’s Mount Vernon home. Its white facade and grand columns exude Southern charm.

Over the years, The Culver Studios has operated under many names. It was once De Mille Studios, RKO-Pathé Studios, and Desilu-Culver Studios. Each name tells a chapter in its evolving story.

The Culver Studios has witnessed the creation of countless classics. “Gone with the Wind,” “Citizen Kane,” and “E.T.” were all filmed here. Imagine the stars who walked these very grounds. Bette Davis. Cary Grant. Katharine Hepburn. All saw their careers blossom here.

Notice the charming bungalows. These housed celebrated writers and actors. Alfred Hitchcock used one as his office. Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh resided in another during “Gone With the Wind.” These bungalows whisper tales of Hollywood’s Golden Age.

Eccentric businessman Howard Hughes once had a stake in The Culver Studios. Filmmakers Cecil B. DeMille and David O. Selznick also left their mark. Their visions shaped the studio into what it is today.

In 1957, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz’s Desilu Productions purchased the lot. Television became the primary focus. Shows like “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Batman” were filmed here. More recently, “Scrubs,” “Arrested Development,” and “Cougar Town” have called The Culver Studios home.

Hackman Capital Partners purchased The Culver Studios in 2014. They modernized the lot while preserving its historic structures. The studio now boasts 720,000 square feet of space. This includes creative offices, production support, and state-of-the-art stages.

Thomas H. Ince’s legacy lives on. The street running through the middle of the studio is named Ince Boulevard. It is a tribute to the man who started it all.

Take a moment to appreciate the history and magic of this place. The Culver Studios is more than just a film lot. It’s a symbol of Hollywood’s enduring power to create and inspire. It will continue to evolve.
