Established in 1992 the Collegium Polonicum stands as a testament to cross-border collaboration. This remarkable institution is a joint venture between Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan and the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt Oder. Its location in Slubice straddling the Polish-German border is no accident. The Collegium Polonicum was envisioned as a bridge fostering intellectual exchange and research. It is a place where Polish and German scholars meet. They collaborate on projects of mutual interest.

The founding of the Collegium Polonicum wasn’t a spontaneous event. It followed years of careful planning and negotiations. The idea originated from a desire to strengthen German-Polish relations. It also aimed to create a center for European studies. This vision was enshrined in the Viadrina University’s founding mission in 1989. The aim was to fulfill tasks concerning German-Polish foreign policy and cultural ties with a view toward Europe.

Securing close scientific networking with Poland was crucial. Cooperation with several Polish universities including Adam Mickiewicz University was vital. Early plans focused on student residences in Slubice. However the 1991 cooperation agreement between Polish and German ministries broadened the scope. It included a research and teaching institution with library and laboratory facilities. The 25th-anniversary celebrations in 2016 highlighted this significant date.

The Collegium Polonicum’s design was selected through a competition. Tomasz Durniewicz’s design was chosen. Construction began in 1995. The building opened in stages. The first part opened in 1998. The entire complex including the library opened in 2001. The impressive structure boasts a total floor space of 20546 square meters. This includes seminar and laboratory rooms conference halls and a large assembly hall. It even has a canteen and offices for staff. The library occupies a significant 5967 square meters. The construction cost approximately PLN 170 million.

Beyond the main building Adam Mickiewicz University also built student residences in Slubice. These were mostly single and double rooms. Some were apartments for staff. Funding for the entire project came from various sources. It included the Polish budget European funds and the Foundation for German-Polish Cooperation. In 2013 Adam Mickiewicz University began reducing its property holdings in Slubice.

The Collegium Polonicum’s management is a fascinating example of binational cooperation. A management board oversees the institution. This board includes an Administrative Director and representatives from both universities. Regular meetings address all aspects of cooperation. The 2002 treaty established a permanent commission. This commission handles issues specifically related to the Collegium Polonicum.

The Collegium Polonicum offers an impressive array of academic programs. These programs are jointly offered by both universities. Some courses are taught in Slubice. Others are held in Frankfurt. The aim is to offer a unique blend of Polish and German perspectives. This helps students to develop intercultural competencies. The Collegium Polonicum is more than just a building. It is a symbol of cooperation. It is a testament to the power of shared goals. It is a place where ideas and cultures meet.
