“Looking for a spiritual home?” I ask. Then look no further than The Church of Pentecost, South La Estates. This vibrant church is part of a global movement. It has roots that stretch back to the Gold Coast in 1937.
The Church of Pentecost started with Rev. James McKeown. He was a missionary from the United Kingdom. He came to Ghana to assist a group of Apostolic Faith believers.
Differences in beliefs led to a split. In 1939, the group divided. One became the Christ Apostolic Church. The other became the Apostolic Church, Gold Coast. James McKeown led the latter.
The Church saw great expansion under McKeown’s leadership. A crisis in 1953 caused another split. This led to the Gold Coast Apostolic Church. McKeown was also in charge here.
In 1957, Ghana gained independence. The Gold Coast Apostolic Church changed its name. It became the Ghana Apostolic Church. Conflicts continued despite the change. Ghana’s President Kwame Nkrumah intervened. He advised the church to adopt a new name. This would promote peace.
On August 1, 1962, a new name was adopted. The Church of Pentecost was legally established. It replaced the Ghana Apostolic Church.
The Church of Pentecost expanded worldwide. This was achieved through missionary work. They also built relationships with other churches. The Church now operates in over 151 nations.
Apostles, prophets, evangelists, and pastors lead the church. They oversee more than 20,000 local assemblies. These assemblies are in about 2,898 districts.
In 2022, the Church had over 4.2 million members globally. Children made up a large portion of this. There were 137,862 church officers. Also, there were 2,492 ordained ministers. They served in 101 nations. The Church of Pentecost continues to grow.
Early leaders include Pastor James McKeown. He served from 1953 to 1982. Apostle Fred Stephen Safo followed. He led from 1982 to 1987. Prophet Martinson Kwadwo Yeboah then took over. He served from 1988 to 1998. Apostle Dr. Michael Kwabena Ntumy was next. His term was from 1998 to 2008. Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah served from 2008 to 2018. The current chairman is Apostle Eric Nyamekye. He has been in office since 2018.
