The Church of Pentecost has roots tracing back to 1937. Rev James McKeown, a British missionary, arrived in Ghana. At the time, Ghana was known as the Gold Coast. McKeown’s arrival marked the beginning of a significant movement.

In 1953, the church was initially founded as the Gold Coast Apostolic Church. After Ghana’s independence in 1957, its name changed to the Ghana Apostolic Church. A conflict arose with the Apostolic Church of Ghana. To resolve this, the then-President of Ghana, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, decreed a new name. Thus, in August 1962, The Church of Pentecost came into being.

From its base in Ghana, The Church of Pentecost expanded globally. It established relationships with other Pentecostal churches. This growth led to a worldwide presence. By 2022, the church boasted over 4.2 million members worldwide. It operated in 151 nations. These nations were overseen by Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists and Senior Pastors. There were approximately 21802 local assemblies in 2898 districts.

The Church of Pentecost believes in key tenets. These include the divine inspiration of the Holy Scriptures. They believe in the existence of one true God. This God is revealed as the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The church also believes that all have sinned. Repentance and regeneration are essential.

Leadership within The Church of Pentecost has evolved. Pastor James McKeown led from 1953 to 1982. Apostle Fred Stephen Safo followed from 1982 to 1987. Prophet Martinson Kwadwo Yeboah served from 1988 to 1998. Apostle Dr Michael Kwabena Ntumy led from 1998 to 2008. Apostle Prof Opoku Onyinah was chairman from 2008 to 2018. The current chairman, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, was re-elected in May 2023.
