Has anyone ever considered the journey of a single seed? How it grows into a mighty tree? The Church of Pentecost in Accra, Ghana, is much like that seed. Planted in 1937 with the arrival of Pastor James McKeown, an Irish missionary sent by the Apostolic Church in Bradford, UK. Originally intended to support a group of believers in Asamankese, McKeown’s work laid the foundation for what would become this expansive church. The Church of Pentecost wasn’t always called that. Initially, it began under McKeown’s leadership as the Apostolic Church, Gold Coast, after a split in 1939 over doctrinal differences. A further constitutional crisis in 1953 led to the formation of the Gold Coast Apostolic Church. With Ghana’s independence in 1957, the church became the Ghana Apostolic Church. Even then, the journey wasn’t over. Internal conflicts persisted, prompting President Kwame Nkrumah to suggest a name change to promote peace among Pentecostal churches. Thus, on August 1, 1962, The Church of Pentecost was officially born. From its humble beginnings, The Church of Pentecost, headquartered right here in Accra, has flourished. It now boasts a global presence in over 150 countries and a membership exceeding 4 million. The Church of Pentecost continues to grow and branch out, much like the mighty tree from the small seed, impacting lives across the world.
