Nestled in Sector 19 Dwarka stands the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes a beacon of faith in the bustling city. This church wasn’t always here. Its story begins in the late 1990s and early 2000s. A growing Catholic community in Dwarka needed a place to worship. A Mass Centre was set up temporarily in Sanghamitra Apartments. Father Paul Serrao from Palam Church travelled there to conduct Sunday masses.
The small group of Catholic families took turns hosting him. They shared their homes and hearts. Their dedication laid the foundation for the church we see today. In 2002 the Archbishop elevated the Mass Centre. It officially became the Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes. Father Aniyan Joseph became its first permanent priest. He worked tirelessly. He established various groups and communities. He fostered a sense of belonging.
The early years saw services in a small shed. Special occasions like Christmas and Easter were celebrated in nearby schools. Mount Carmel and St Gregorious Schools opened their doors to the growing congregation. This showcased the spirit of community and cooperation. The church’s growth also showed the devotion of the people of Dwarka. It proved that faith flourishes where people come together.
Meanwhile a plot of land was secured. Construction of a proper church building began. Father Vivian Rebello laid the foundation stone. Father Charles D’Souza the Archdiocese Procurator oversaw the project. The parishioners were involved in building their new church. They worked alongside skilled builders. Their joint efforts demonstrated the power of collective faith.
The new church was inaugurated on March 18 2007. It marked a significant milestone. It showed the dedication and perseverance of the community. Over the years various priests served the parish. Each one contributed to its spiritual growth. The church continued to expand its outreach programs.
Today the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Dwarka is a vibrant community. It holds regular masses. It offers spiritual guidance. It supports numerous social initiatives.
