Their mission spearheaded by Reverend Thomas Birch Freeman in 1839 was to bring the Gospel to the ‘dark Ashanti’. It wasn’t easy. Freeman faced many obstacles. He was delayed for 48 days before even reaching Kumasi. Imagine his perseverance his unwavering dedication to his cause.

Yet the Asantehene Nana Kwaku Duah I welcomed Freeman. He permitted preaching in the streets and even allowed services in the King’s palace. The seed of Methodism was planted. It was a small seed but it held immense potential.

Freeman’s second trip to Kumasi in 1841 brought gifts for the Asantehene. These weren’t mere tokens but symbolic gestures of goodwill. A carriage a table chairs fine linens. The Asantehene was impressed.

By 1842 the first Methodist mission post in Kumasi was established. The King gifted the mission land at Krobo Odumase a location that still holds significant Methodist properties today including the Diocesan Headquarters. It’s a fascinating detail a link to the past that we can still see today.
