Nestled within the heart of Sienna Plantation, this house of worship carries a unique story. It stands as a beacon of faith for the community, a stark contrast to the land’s history. Before the hymns and sermons, this land echoed with the struggles and sorrows of enslaved people. Sienna Plantation, once a sprawling empire of sugar cane and cotton, bore witness to a darker chapter. This very ground you walk on was part of the Arcola Plantation, potentially holding one of the largest enslaved populations in a single Texan plantation. The name “Sienna” itself is a remnant of a rebranding effort, a move away from the painful echoes of the past. The original Sienna Plantation, named after the Italian region of Siena, was an attempt to shroud the land’s history. Despite these attempts to rewrite the past, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Sienna Plantation Ward stands as a symbol of hope and new beginnings.
